The Real Reason Tom Bergeron Left Dancing With The Stars

Over the years, Dancing with the Stars has become an American television phenomenon. It’s essentially the dance equivalent of American Idol. Since its inception in 2005, the dance competition has showcased celebrities of all stripes season after season, but one constant has been lovable, charismatic host Tom Bergeron.

As one of the few consistent elements of the show, it certainly came as a shock when news broke that Bergeron would not be returning for the competition’s upcoming season. In May 2020, ABC confirmed that the show would be returning for Season 29 as part of its fall 2020 lineup. That being said, it’s unclear if the network had plans to push out Bergeron as host at the time of the show’s renewal announcement.

As of the making of this video, the only Season 29 contestant who has been announced is Bachelor Nation alum Kaitlyn Bristowe. While we’re not sure who will be joining her, we do know that Bergeron won’t be around to cheer any of the contestants on. So why the sudden change? The reasoning behind the move is unclear at the moment, but here’s what we know.

You’d think that Bergeron would have been given a heads up about the fact that Season 29 was going to go on without him, but it seemed like he was just as surprised as everyone else. On July 13th, 2020, the longtime TV host tweeted the following to his more than 200,000 followers:

“Just informed [Dancing With the Stars] will be continuing without me. It’s been an incredible 15 year run and the most unexpected gift of my career. I’m grateful for that and for the lifelong friendships made. That said, now what am I supposed to do with all of these glitter masks?”

In a joint statement with BBC Studios, ABC stated:

“As we embark on a new creative direction, [Bergeron] departs the show with our sincerest thanks and gratitude for his trademark wit and charm that helped make this show a success.”

Along with Bergeron, Erin Andrews, who has co-hosted alongside Bergeron since Season 18, won’t be returning for Season 29 either. In a tweet posted on July 14, 2020, Andrews said,

“I will always cherish my days on that set, even if I wasn’t the best at walking in heels.”

Fans were surely curious to find out who will fill Bergeron’s big shoes, and thankfully, they didn’t have to wait too long for an answer.

On July 15, 2020 — one day after Bergeron announced via Twitter that he won’t be returning — ABC announced via Twitter that model and former daytime talk show host Tyra Banks will be the new host of the dance competition show. The tweet read,

“Please join us in welcoming @tyrabanks as #DWTS host. Thank you to @Tom_Bergeron and @ErinAndrews for so many seasons of glitz, glamour, and good times!”

The former America’s Next Top Model host released a statement through ABC and BBC Studios, saying,

“I’ve been a fan of [Dancing With the Stars] since its beginning. The fun mixed with raw emotion, seeing celebrities push past their comfort zones, the sizzling dance performances. It’s always transported me to my days of turning it up 10 notches on the catwalk.”

As for Bergeron’s next move, he’s found other ways to keep busy. The charismatic host is co-producing a new upcoming scripted comedy television series called Down the Middle.

The show is described as a six-part digital series about a modern odd couple. There’s Karen, who is an uptight workaholic “who lives for the job,” and Aurora, who is a “bohemian trust fund baby who has never had to punch the clock.” The plot line of the series will include Karen and Aurora working together to keep Aurora’s father’s ad agency alive after his retirement.

No release date or online home for the series appears to have been announced yet. But since Bergeron knows a thing or two about comedy — he did produce America’s Funniest Home Videos between 2006 and 2015, after all, and hosted the show for 14 years — this sounds right up his alley. He may even find something to do with all those glitter masks. Watch the video to learn The Real Reason Tom Bergeron Left Dancing With The Stars!

  1. Along with their sincerest thanks and gratitude … comes a PINK slip? Tommy, we hardly knew ye. Bergeron made the show. Will not be watching. Actually, have watched since season one, but asking sean spiceboy to join the cast ended it for us. Good thing, we won't have withdrawal, and feel so sad.

  2. She is the reason I quit watching America’s Top Model. I enjoyed the first few seasons – then it became all about her. Not interested in watching her dance on the sidelines (with cameras filming) and missing the pros and contestants routines. Not interested in listening to her disrespect the judges because her opinion is no relevant. No I’ll pass.

  3. I will follow tom and Erin on with their new adventures. I've watched dwts since day one. I strongly disagree with this decision

  4. I can't believe they replaced him!!! He was a great host. He's been really good in everything he has done. I wish him all the best. Won't watch the show anymore. I don't care for Tyra Banks at all. I always watch AGT but when she was the host it was really hard to watch. Sorry, just my opinion.

  5. The network really made a bad move by pulling this crap. You can tell that Tom had rapport with many of the people, and he was fun to watch. Tyra is not. Sorry, l'm out too. Put her back on another model show where she belongs. ABC you suck as much as your choice.

  6. Are you out of your mind!!!! Replacing Tom and Erin with Tyra Banks!!! I have been a faithful watcher since the very beginning but I will definitely not continue to watch with the new arrangement! Are you totally stupid!!! You have just ruined one of the most likeable shows with whatever stupid decision your management deemed necessary. You are total loosers and I hope your new agenda is a total flop! I am heartbroken!!!!

  7. I don't know anything about Tyra as a host, but I do know that Tom has been the best host of DWTS. He has made the show. I wasn't that impressed with Erin as co-host, but I think they made a mistake getting rid of Tom. He has been such a natural.

  8. Tyra wasn't good on ATM, or AGT, or her own talk show so what is Disney thinking,do they just want to kill the show ?

  9. I won’t be watching! The show just won’t be the same without Bergeron and Andrews. The end of the show is very near….

  10. Don’t like the change of hosts and I will not be watching it again. I did not like it when Brooke left. Do not change what was not broken…

  11. Big mistake getting rid if Tom Bergeron. Tyra Banks has no business hosting this show. I will not watch it anymore.

  12. Left or fired to make a room for black host? Politics in Hollywood are all screwed up!!! Equality for whom exactly???? Demand and you might get!!!!
